Generation No. 1

1. SIR THOMAS18 COLCLOUGH, KT (SIR ANTHONY 17, RICHARD 16, JOHN 15, RICHARD 14, THOMAS 13, JOHN 12, RICHARD 11, HUGH 10, RICHARD 9, THOMAS 8, THOMAS "COKELICO" 7, SELWYN 6 DE COKESLEY, ?, WILLIAM 5 DE COKELE, ?, WALTER 4 COKELE, WALTER 3 DE COKELE, KT, ? 2, LORD OF THE MANOR OF 1 COLCLEGHE, IN SUFFOLK) was born April 1, 1564 in Rosegarland, Wexford, Ireland, and died August 23, 1624. He married (1) MARTHA LOFTUS, OF ARMAGH Abt. 1589 in Ireland, daughter of ADAM LOFTUS and JANE PURDON. He married (2) ELEANOR BAGENAL 1612 in Ireland, daughter of DUDLEY BAGENAL and MABEL FITZGERALD.

Notes for SIR THOMAS COLCLOUGH, KT:

Sir Thomas spent a great deal of time in England concentrating on raising as

much money as possible from the Staffordshire estates selling off a lot of land

and speculating for the purpose of investment in Irish land,of which he had

over 25000 acres by the end of his life. In Ireland he used the ordinary

techniques of the English land-grabber, lending money to improvident

land-owners secured by mortgages of their property often for quite small sums

out of all relation to the value of the property and foreclosing when they

failed to meet a demand for repayment made at a carefully chosen inconvenient

time,or purchasing from the Irish who held only life estates and accepted the

price of a life estate without appreciating that in the hands of an Englishman

it became a freehold.

Sir Thomas had eleven children by his first wife,Martha, who were all brought

up as Protestants. He had two sons by his second wife Eleanor, who were brought up as Catholics. From this dates the split in the family between Catholics and Protestants. It seems that religion was mainly a matter of convenience to them. during the operation of the Penal Laws sectarian land-grabbers trying to get hold of the Colclough estates on the ground that they were held by Papists

constantly were defeated because though the occupant might be a Papist the

legal owner was his Protestant son. Some of the Colcloughs were Quakers.

Sir Thomas was wounded at the battle of Enniscorthy, where his brother Leonard

was killed.

Sir Thomas left his lands in the Duffry to his Catholic sons. It was his

grandson Patrick who built the magnificient Duffry Hall in 1685.

Sir T was Lord of the manor of Hanley,( see John Ward, The Borough of Stoke on Trent London 1843)

BIFR. Anthony of Rathlin was a son of Sir Thomas and Eleanor Bagenal.

He died in France 1663.

Dudley had a large amount of land in the Duffry where he lived at Monart. Some

of this land was inherited, some purchased and more come to him from his

marriage to his second wife Katherine. As a result of his participation in the

rebellion he forfeited all his land (14,614 acres) and was banished to

He married MARY ESMOND, OF JOHNSTOWN, WEXFORD Abt. 1640, daughter of WILLIAM ESMONDE.

Notes for ANTHONY COLCLOUGH, OF RATHLIN:

Anthony of Rathlin,co Wexford.Anthony was a Protestant who worked for repeal

of the penal laws against Catholics as many of the Protestant Colcloughs

did.For this reason he took the oath of the Catholic Confederation. This was a

political matter and not a theological one. After the rebellion of 1641 his

Catholic brother Dudley of Monart was banished to Connaught, but Anthony and

John being Protestants, were not punnished. They had together led the rebel army

of 300 which had beseiged Tintern Abbey which was being defended by their aunt

Alice Lady Colclough, widow of the 1st baronet.

1 NOTE !Alice had in fact arranged for Tintern to be garrisoned by a detachment of

British troops and gone to England. JRC suggests that the motives of the three

brothers in leading the attack were probably to ensure that it did not get out

of hand and to prevent the sacking of their ancestral home.

8. SIR CAESAR20 COLCLOUGH, 2ND BARONET (SIR ADAM 19, SIR THOMAS 18, SIR ANTHONY 17, RICHARD 16, JOHN 15, RICHARD 14, THOMAS 13, JOHN 12, RICHARD 11, HUGH 10, RICHARD 9, THOMAS 8, THOMAS "COKELICO" 7, SELWYN 6 DE COKESLEY, ?, WILLIAM 5 DE COKELE, ?, WALTER 4 COKELE, WALTER 3 DE COKELE, KT, ? 2, LORD OF THE MANOR OF 1 COLCLEGHE, IN SUFFOLK) was born 1624 in Ireland, and died June 22, 1684 in Ireland. He married FRANCES CLARKE Abt. 1650, daughter of SIT WILLIAM CLARKE, OF THORNE, OXON.

Notes for SIR CAESAR COLCLOUGH, 2ND BARONET:

Tintern Abbey was always in the possession of a Protestant Colclough although

armies of informers tried to acquire it by denouncing them as Papists. It

passed from Protestant father to Protestont grandson, the Catholic son occupying

Duffrey Hall from which he could not be evicted as a Papist because it belonged

to his Protestant father.Very few children were born at Tintern -- always at

Duffry, though they died at Tintern. The Tintern Protestants sheltered the

Catholic priests who said Mass for the inhabitants and provided Catholic

teachers for the village schools, but when the priest-hunters came to search the

Abbey they found only a large number of male servants wearing the blue and

yellow livery of the Colcloughs and not a priest among them.

Sir Caesar was only 14 when he inherited the baronetcy on the death of his

father. He was at school in England at the time, and remained there most of his

life, returning to Tintern only late in life.He was MP for Newcastle from 1661

to 1679.

Notes for SIR CAESAR COLCLOUGH, 3RD BARONET:

This Sir Caesar Colclough was the 3rd (and last) Baronet of Tintern Abbey,co

Wexford. He was Dep.Lt-Gov.co Kilkenny. He died childless and so the baronetcy

became extinct, and the estates passed to his sister,Margaret.Sir Ceasar's will

gave her a life interest on the condition that her husband adopt the arms and

name of Colclough. He also stipulated that if Margaret had no children the

Tintern estates would go to Caesar of Duffry Hall, great grandson of Dudley who

had died in exile.

iii. MARGARET COLCLOUGH, b. Abt. 1653; d. April 23, 1723; m. (1) ROBERT LEIGH, OF ROSEGARLAND, 1673, Ireland; m. (2) JOHN PIGOTT, 1696, Ireland.

He married KATHERINE BAGENAL Abt. 1663 in Ireland, daughter of WALTER BAGENAL and ELIZABETH BARNEWALL.

Notes for PATRICK COLCLOUGH, OF DUFFRY:

Patrick of Duffrey Hall co Wexford was High Sheriff 1688,MP for Enniscorthy

1689.

Patrick succeeded in recovering nearly half the land lost by his father Dudley

on the grounds that he himself was a Protestant and had taken no part in the

rebellion. He was the builder of Duffry Hall.

There is a painting attributed to Franz Hals dated 1663 and supposedly of Patrick in his uniform of Captain of the Royal Buffs Regiment of Cavaliers. Painted in the year of his 20th birthday, which would make his birth date 1643 - maybe a little late?

Children of PATRICK COLCLOUGH and KATHERINE BAGENAL are:

12. i. DUDLEY21 COLCLOUGH, OF DUFFRY, b. Abt. 1671, Co Wexford; d. December 7, 1712.

Surveyor of the Green Wax to act as a kind of ombudsman and auditor-general,clearing up corruption in all parts of the civil service and

particulary the courts.

Adam of Boley foughtfor King James in the Battle of the Boyne alongside

Francis Colclough of Duffrey and Adam colclough of Grays Inn.Francis was exiled and joined the French Irish Brigade.Adam of Grays Inn was pardoned and returned to England, but Adam of Boley got away with it completely having been confused in the records with Adam of Grays Inn,and returned to Boley Castle unpunished.

Adam of Boley and his second cousin Adam of grays Inn both held a number of

Crown appointments under King James II. They were both protestants but others

trying to get these jobs confused the two Adams swearing oaths that they were

the same person and Papists. Since both Adams were supporters of King James

they deemed it wise to make no protest, keeping a low profile.

"- - in the Protestant Cemetery of Remembrance,Freshford - - Bur near right front window of the church Beneath this monument are Deposited the remains of William Colclough of Kyle who died Nov.- - 18-5,aged50",His wife Eleanor who died in March.Erected by their son John Colclough as a mark of filial affection." Don Pennell believed that this William was the son of Anthony. Peter Salmon Colclough quotes a letter from a James Ryan, Stonemason "Beneath this monument are deposited the remains of the late William Colclough,of Kyle, who departed this life 2nd November 1815 aged 59 years. Also his wife Elenor who departed this life 7th March 1817 aged 47 years. Erected by their son John Colclough in testimony of his filial affection."

1 NOTE !We appear to have two William Colcloughs both known as being "of Kyle",and both married to wives named "Ellen" or "Eleanor",and both being grandsons of Adam Colclough of Boley.Confusing.However this must be the William who was son of Anthony.

Notes for WILLIAM COLCLOUGH, OF KYLE, TUBRID, EATON:

Marriage Bonds for Diocese Killaloe shows: "Colclough,William & Ellenor

Caldbeck,1787".

1 NOTE !D.J.Pennell quotes the Kilkenny Archaeological Society "Under ash tree, between

tomb of Dillon and Campion "Under this tomb lie the remains of the late William

Colclough,Kyle, who died November 1825,aged 59.Also his wife Ellen who died in

May aged 47.Erected by son John".

1 NOTE !We appear to have two William Colcloughs both known as being "of Kyle",and

both married to wives named "Ellen" or "Eleanor",and both being grandsons of

Adam Colclough of Boley.Confusing. However this William must be the one who

married Ellinor Caldbeck.

If these two Williams&Ellens are confusing, consider that the Fertagh Regester

shows a "Henry Colclough son of William (farmer) & Ellinor of Tubrid, Baptised

03.01.1830"!! So it appears that there must have been yet another couple named

William & Ellinor Colclough living in the area a bit later. I have found no

other trace of this third couple, but find it hard to doubt the church Register.
