1425 Thomas, Prior of Trentham, sued John Delves to give up to him land and the heir of RICHARD COLCLOUGH which belonged to him as RICHARD held land of Thomas the late Prior by military service: and the Prior stated that the sd. Richard had held land of Thomas, the late prior, amounting to seven messuages, 300 acres of land and 40 acres of meadow in Bloreton as of right of his church at Trentham by military service and by homage of fealty and a scutage of 40d when the King's scutage of 40s was levied and that the deceased was in the homage of the late prior and that after the death of the late prior the sd. Thomas had been elected prior of the sd. church so that the wardship fell to him. John appeared in person and admitted the claim of the prior.( Note by Editor: This was probably a collusive suit. Blurton had been given to the Priory in free alms and the grant had been ratified by the King. If a prior held military fiefs he was summoned to Parliament and there is no record of that in the case of Trentham) (S.Vol XVII 1896 106)

He is described as "gent, of Newcastle, holding land at Blurton" Mention of him occurs from 1442 to 1464 in which latter year he was outlawed for debt. He was possibly a son of John Colclough of Hanley and for his pedigree see the Visitation of Staffs. RICHARD his son and heir was mayor of Newcastle in 1478 (S.Vol 1917-18 230)
1455 THOMAS COLCLOUGH of Newcastle, gent, and RICHARD COLCLOUGH of Chelle, yeoman, with ROGER COLCLOUGH of Stafford, yeoman, sued by Richard Bagot, arminger for a debt of £40. The defendants did not appear (S.Vol III N.S. 1900.218)

1456

"At Trinity Term 1456 Geoffrey Middleton was suing John Richard Colclowe of Chelle, gentleman, Thomas Keelyng, John Robinson and John Weggyvode, all yeomen of Wulstynton, for breaking into his close at Chatterle and taking 21 steers, 10 heifers 6 horses and 5 mares worth £40. The defendants did not appear and the sheriff was ordered to arrest them. This Richard Colclough appears to have been a typical swash-buckler of the time, leading bands of ‘malefactors’ or ‘patriots’ on one side or the other during the Wars of the Roses; lying in wait to murder ‘malefactors’ or ‘patriots’ on the other side; and evading arrest with uniform success. The Wars of the Roses began with Warwick’s victory at St. Albans on 22 May 1455 and the Yorkists were still dominant in May 1456. Both Richard and Thomas Colclough who was M.P. for Newcastle in the Yorkist Parliament of 1450 and in the Lancastrian of 1453 were probably bailiffs of Sir Richard Bagot, Sheriff of Staffs, in 1452-3; for in 1455 and 1456 Bagot as ex-sheriff is suing each of them for 5 marks. The evidence leads one to suppose that Richard Colclough at any rate, considered the Red Rose to be the right colour. He died or was killed in 1473..... With John Wedgwood of Blackwood in 1474 we begin the consecutive (Wedgwood) pedigree. It may be that he is the same as that boisterous follower of Richard Colclough who broke in and lifted cattle from Chatterley in 1456.

"The Colclough descent is traced (by Ward) down to the heiress of Thomas Swinnerton of Butterton, the husband of Margaret Colclough. Sir Thomas Colclough held this manor in 1615. He removed to Ireland and was buried at Tintern Abbey Co. Wexford in 1642 aet.66. Colclough is in Oldcott, the name still being preserved in Colclough Lane. The site of the manor of Hanley survived in Old Hall (Ward,p.78) Blurton like Cocknage is not named by Chetwynd. The Colclough family were landowners here, Colclough itself being in Wolstanton parish and constantly connected with Newcastle, John Colclough being bailiff of the town in 1380. The Colclough pedigree will be found in Staffs.Hist Coll.Vol V p2. They rose to considerable importance in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, four members being knighted in succession. In 1425 the prior claimed from John Delves the custody of the lands and heir of Richard Colcloough of Trentham, holding seven messuages and 340 acres. (S Vol XII 1909 57)(also CS6)

He was released on sureties including Thomas Colclough the younger of Newcastle and Thomas Stokely of London, gent. A postscript notes that the following Michaelmas Thomas appeared in court and claimed his release on the ground that there was no place called Newcastle simply in Co. Stafford but made no claim on the ground that the name had been misspelt. The King's Attorney appeared and defended the legality of the outlawry and appealed to a jury which was to be summoned for the quindene of Easter day 5 Ed.IV at which date the sheriff made no return to the writ and a further postscript shows that no jury had been empanelled up to Michaelmas 6 Ed.IV (S.Vol.IV 1901 132)
